Question: Nowadays, we see in functions that people serve each other different items of food. Somebody said that this is not right and everyone should serve themselves. Please guide us about this. ............................................................................
Answer: If the guests are present and food has been served, then for the guests it is Mubah (permissible) for those present to have it. Now the question of guests serving each other. About this, there are 2 opinions of the jurists (Fuqaha). Some have said that it is not correct, but many have said in the generally followed customs, the guests are permitted by the host to serve and offer food to each other. Thus, the places where this custom is followed, there is allowance for doing it. However, what we have to remember is that food should not be wasted. Nobody should be served so much that it is beyond them or that it becomes taxing for the person. As given in Fatawa A'alamgiri, Vol. 5, Kitabul Karahiyya. And Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) knows best.
