f:663 -    What kind of games are allowed for children
Country : India,
Name : Abdullah
Question:     For children, what kinds of games are allowed in Islam?  Can we play caroms board?
............................................................................
Answer:     The Shariah permits such games which exercise the brain and/or the body, provided time is not wasted and the rights of Allah Most High and the rights of the creation are not affected and neither should one become heedless of Salaat.

Thus, for mental exercise, scrabbles, poetry contests (Bait Bazi in Urdu) can be played.

In physical exercises, games like archery, horse riding and swimming, etc. are allowed by the Shariah.  Games like caroms, snake and ladders, etc. are only a waste of time.  They cater to the desires, but there is no benefit from them.  Thus, games like these should be avoided.  Those games which are allowed, cannot be played with gambling.  As given in Fatawa A'alamgiri, Kitabul Karahiyya and Radd Ul Muhtaar, Kitabul Hazri Wal Ibaha.

And Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) knows best.
