Country : India,
Name : Abdul Hai
Question:     I have heard that a camel became rebellious and the owner of the camel came to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and complained.  When that camel saw the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), it performed a Sajdah.  Is this true?  Please answer with complete reference.

Answer:     This incident happened in Madina.  The owner of the camel was a Madinite Companion.  Imam Ahmed has recorded this incident in his Musnad on the authority of Hadhrat Anas (May Allah be well pleased with him).  Imam Qustullani, the interpreter of Sahih Bukhari has also mentioned this in Mawahib Ladunniya and Imam Zurqani has also mentioned this as well.

The Hadith from Musnad Imam Ahmed is being mentioned here:

Translation:  Hadhrat Hafs (May Allah be well pleased with him) narrates on the authority of Hadhrat Anas (May Allah be well pleased with him), he said: In the house of one of the Natives of Madina, there was a camel whom he would use in irrigation of his fields.  That camel became rebellious and would not allow anyone to mount it.

The Companion came to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and said:  O Prophet of Allah!  We have a camel which we use in irrigation.  It has become rebellious and stops us from riding it.  The fields and the orchards of date palms have dried up.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) told his Companion: Get up.  All of them got up and along with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) went to the orchard.

The camel was in one corner of the orchard.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) went there.  The Companion said: O Prophet of Allah!  This camel has become like a mad dog.  I fear it will harm you.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: I have nothing to worry from it.  When the camel saw the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), it came towards Him, prostrated to Him and sat before Him.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) held the hair of its forehead.  It became as well-behaved as it never had been.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) put it back to work.

The Companions said: O Prophet of Allah!  This is an animal.  It does not have any sense, but still prostrates before you.  We have sense and intellect.  We are more deserving than it to prostrate to you.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: It does not suit a man to prostrate to another man.  (Musnad Imam Ahmed, Hadith No: 121153)

And Allah Most High knows best.
