Question:     Can we offer Witr Salaat behind a Shafa'ee Imam?
............................................................................
Answer:     As per Fiqh Hanafi, Witr is offered as 3 Raka'at.

This is clearly established by the Hadith of Sihah Sittah (the 6 most rigorously-authenticated books of Hadith) and other canons of Hadith.  The routine of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) about Salaat Ul Witr is mentioned in Jame’ Tirmidhi:

Translation of Hadith:  It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Ali (May Allah Ta’ala be well pleased with him), he said that: The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) would perform 3 Raka’at of Witr.  (Jame’ Tirmidhi, Vol. 1, Pg No: 106)

There is a Hadith in Sunan Dara Qutni:

Translation of Hadith:  It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abdullah Bin Mas’ud (May Allah Ta’ala be well pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: The Salaat offered in the night (after Salaat Ul Isha), Witr, has 3 Raka’at, the way the Wtir of the day, Maghrib has 3 Raka’at.  (Sunan Dara Qutni, Hadith No: 1672)

As per Fiqh Shafa'i, the Salaat is ended at 2 Raka'at, then again 1 Raka'at is offered.  Thus, for those who follow Fiqh Hanafi, Witr behind a Shafa'i Imam is not correct.  They should offer Salaat Ul Witr separately.

And Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) knows best.
