f:445 -    Zakaat on diamonds and expensive clothes

Name : Shaykh Liyaqat
Question:     Should we give Zakaat on other precious metals/stones like gems, diamonds, etc.  Also, should we give Zakaat on expensive clothes, like those bought for marriages, which are extremely expensive but rarely worn?

Answer:     In itself, Zakaat is not Compulsory on precious stones like gems, etc.  However, if these are bought and kept as trading goods, then Zakaat is Compulsory on them if they meet the prescribed criterion and 1 year passes on them.  In the same way, Zakaat is not Compulsory on clothes.  If they are for trade purposes, then the ruling is the same as the above.
