Question: I have heard that reciting the same Surah more than once in the same Raka?at is wrong, but I have heard about Nafl Salaat in which say Surah Ikhlas is to be recited 3 or 5 times. What is the correct ruling? ............................................................................
Answer: The Fuqaha (jurists) have clarified about reciting the same Surah more than once in the same Raka’at. It is undesirable (Makruh Tanzeehi) to recite the same Surah in the same Raka’at in Fardh Salaat more than once. The Salaat is not invalidated (Fasid) by this, but is valid with a degree of undesirability. This is for Fardh Salaat. In Nafl Salaat, reciting the same Surah any number of times in the same Raka’at is permissible without any undesirability. As per the clarifications of the Fuqaha, there is no undesirability in reciting the same Surah a number of times in the same Raka’at in Nafl Salaat. As given in Fatawa A’alamgiri, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 107: Translation: Repeating the same Surah in the same Raka’at is Makruh in Fardh and there is no problem in doing so in Nafl Salaat. And Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) knows best.
