f:399 -    What to do if parents ask us not to keep beards
Country : India,
Name : Umar Abdullah
Question:     What should we do if our parents ask us not to sport beards?

............................................................................
Answer:     Sporting a beard is a Sunnah and keeping it less than 1 fistful is not allowed by the Shariah.  Obedience to parents is compulsory for the children, but parents should not be obeyed if they order something against the Shariah.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has prohibited us from obeying the creation by disobeying Allah.  As mentioned in a Hadith:

Translation: Allah Most High should not be disobeyed in obedience of creation.  (Musnad Ahmed Bin Hambal, Hadith No. 21195)

If your parents or someone else don’t give you permission for sporting a beard, it is not permissible for you to obey them and remove the beard.  You keep your beard as per the Shariah and describe its importance to them.  As given in Durre Mukhtaar, Kitab Us Sawm.

And Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) knows best.
