f:398 -    Will Allah call us with our Imams

Question:     On Qiyamah, Allah Ta?ala will call everybody with their Imams or with their Imam?  How correct is this?  Who will be those Imams?

Answer:     On the day of Judgment, Allah Most High will call His slaves along with their Imams.  As given in the Holy Quran:

(Call to mind) the Day when We shall call every section of people along with their leaders.  Surah Bani Israil (17:71)

What does “Imam” mean? In the light of the Hadith and other Traditions of the Companions, the experts of exegesis of the Holy Quran have described many meanings.  Imam Suyuti has mentioned the following Hadith in the Tafseer of the above verse:

Hadhrat Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) narrates from the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) that “Imam” means the leader and elite of the people in their times.  It may mean the Holy Quran and the Hadith as well.  As given in Tafseer Durre Manthur.

It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Anas (May Allah be well pleased with him) that Imam means the Prophets of the particular people.

It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abbas that Imam means the records of their deeds (A’amaal Nama in Urdu)  (Durre Manthur, Surah Bani Israil-71)

Imam means those people whom they used to follow, as the great exegete Abu Ja’afar Muhammad Bin Jareer At Tabari (deceased 310 Hijri) writes in his exegesis:

Translation:  Among these opinions, the better one in our opinion is that on the Day of Qiyamah, Allah Ta’ala will call the people along with their Imams whom they used to follow in the world, as in Arabic, the word “Imam” is predominantly used in this sense. (Jame Ul Bayan Fi Taweel Il Quran Li Abi Ja’afar Muhammad Bin Jarir At Tabari, Surah Bani Israil-71)
