f:397 -    Can husband force wife to visit in-laws

Name : Aliya Sultana
Question:     My husband always forces me to spend the weekly holiday with my in-laws.  I don?t consider it correct to live along with my in-laws.  Does the husband have the right to force me to live with them?

Answer:     Allah Most High has stressed maintain cordial relations with relatives and treating them nicely in the Holy Quran:

And worship Allah and do not set up any partners with Him. And treat the parents with moral excellence and (do good to) relatives, orphans, the needy, close as well as unacquainted neighbors, and your fellows and the wayfarers and those whom you possess. Surely Allah does not like the one who is arrogant (self-conceited) and boastful (egoist),  Surah Nisa (4:36)

And give to the kindred their rightful due and also (give) to the needy and the wayfarer and do not exhaust (your wealth) by expending wastefully.  Surah Bani Israil (17:26)

It is compulsory for the wife to follow the husband in matters, which are permissible.  Thus, if the husband wants to take his wife to his parents or relatives, then the wife should obey her husband and do so.  It is not permissible in the light of the Shariah to break relations with anybody without a valid reason.  

And Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) knows best.
