f:389 -    If the Imam misses the Sajdah
Country : Hyderabad, India,
Name : Safi Khalid
Question:     If the Imam performs only one Sajdah in Salaat and stand up for the next Raka'at, what should be done?
............................................................................
Answer:     In every Raka’at, 2 Sajdah are Fardh (obligatory) and are the articles of the Salaat.  If any Fardh is delayed in the Salaat, then the Sajdah Sahw (prostration on forgetfulness) becomes Wajib (compulsory) and if any obligatory article of Salaat is missed, then the Salaat is rendered invalid and should be offered again.

If the Imam performs only 1 Sajdah in a Raka’at and goes for the next Raka’at, then if he remembers it in the next Raka’at, he should perform it before the Tashahud, i.e. he should offer 3 Sajdah and should also perform the Sajdah Sahw for delaying the Fardh.

If he remembers it after reciting the Tashahud, then he should perform 1 Sajdah and should perform Sajdah Sahw.

If he remembers it on ending the Salaat and he has not turned his face away from the Qiblah and has not performed any other act, which breaks the Salaat then he should perform it then and also perform Sajdah Sahw.  As given in Fatawa A’alamgiri, Vol. 1, Kitab Us Salaat.

And Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) knows best.
