f:35 -    Using toothpaste while fasting
Country : Not mentioned,
Name : Khalid Hussain
Question:     During Ramadhan, sometimes it is difficult to get up on time for Sahr. Sometimes we get up late and there is no time to use tooth paste or tooth powder. In such a case, can we use tooth powder or tooth paste at our leisure, after Fajr?
............................................................................
Answer:     In a fast, anything except Miswaak, like tooth powder, toothpaste should not be used, as it has some taste.  Even if they are used carefully, their use is not free of undesirability. If some particles find their way into the throat, then the fast is invalidated.  Thus, tooth paste, tooth powder, etc. should never be used.  As given in Fatawa A’alamgiri Vol. 1 Pg no 199.

It is a Sunnah and Commendable to use Miswak when fasting instead of tooth paste or tooth powder. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has declared the use of Miswak to be the best habit of a fasting person.

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:

Translation: The best habit of a fasting person is the use of Miswak. (Bada'i Us Sana'i, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 269)

It is given in Fatawa A’alamgiri, Vol. 1 Pg. No.199:

Translation: In our opinion, there is no harm in a fasting person's use of either wet or dry Miswak.

There is much excellence and many medicinal benefits in using Miswak. The least benefit of using Miswak is that the mouth is free of odor and the best benefit is that the person dies with Iman.  As given in Durre Mukhtaar Vol. 1, Pg. No. 85.

And Allah Most High knows best.
