f:288 -    Trade in musical instruments
Country : Nizamabad, India,
Name : submittername
Question:     Is trade in musical instruments permissible or not?
............................................................................
Answer:     There are various Hadith about musical instruments.  There is a Hadith in Imam Baihaqui’s Shu’ab Ul Iman:

Translation:  It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Jabir bin Abdullah (May Allah be well pleased with them) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: Singing and playing (musical instruments) grows hypocrisy in the heart, the way water grows a crop.(Shu’ab Ul Iman, Vol. 4, Pg. No. 972)

Devils dance on the shoulders of those who sing and play as given in “Tafseerat Ahmadiya” Pg. No. 400:

Translation:  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: Whoever raises voice in singing, Allah Most High imposes 2 devils on that person, one on one shoulder and the other on another and they keep dancing until this person becomes silent.

It is given in Durre Mukhtaar, Vol. 5, Pg. No. 542:

Translation:  All kinds of useless things are Haraam (forbidden).

Musical instruments are themselves a sin and they are used in singing, etc., so their trade is Makruh Tahreemi (Strictly undesirable) and is a great sin.  As given in Radd Ul Muhtaar, Vol. 3, Pg. No. 342/343.

And Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) knows best.
