Question:     Assalamalaikum wa Rahmatullah! One of my friends wants to embrace Islam.  Among the 4 Imams whom should he follow?

Answer:     You please make your friend recite the Kalima without any delay and educate him about Tauheed (unity of Allah Ta'ala), Prophethood and other basics of Iman.  Also educate him about rules of worship (Ibadat) and other social rules.

The Holy Quran and the Hadith are the foundation of Islamic law.  They have the solutions of all the problems of life.  Even though they are in simple language, they contain many complex commands, understanding them and extracting and deducting rulings from them is difficult even for an expert in language leave alone a lay person.  Mere mastery over language does not mean mastery over the intricacies of law.

Also, the demands of every age are different.  For e.g. in the present times, share business, insurance, fixed deposit and selling something before gaining possession of it, online trade, etc. and many others are there that cannot be understood and solved only on the basis of one's knowledge and understanding.  

Thus, it is necessary to follow any one Imam/Jurist (Mujtahid) who have described and enunciated the principles in light of the Holy Quran and Hadith.  They have also described the rules and rulings for every single thing that can happen in human life right from birth to death and have described it in books of Fiqh (from Kitab Ut Taharah to Kitab Ul Faraaidh).  This corpus of knowledge is called Fiqh.  Thus, following these highly reliable Imams is obeying the Holy Quran and Sunnah.

All the 4 Imams are true and we should follow any one of them.

And Allah Most High knows best.
