f:251 -    What to do if one goes into Ruku after reciting Surah Fatiha
Country : India,
Name : Abdullah
Question:     Assalamalaikum wa Rahmatullah! If a person who offers Salaat has recited Surah Fatiha and is going in to Ruku, but comes back and recites Surah Ikhlas or some other Surah, then is it correct?  In Fardh, Wajib, Sunnah or Nafl Salaat.

Answer:     Walaikum Assalamalaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa barakutuhu,

Ruku means to bend.  The least limit of Ruku is to bend so much that the hands touch the knees.  If someone bends less than this, then this is not called Ruku and that person is considered to be in the standing position (Qiyam) only.  That person can stand straight and recite another Surah after Surah Fatiha.  There is no need to perform any prostration on forgetting some article of Salaat (Sajda Sahw).  Regardless of whether the Salaat is Obligatory (Fardh), Compulsory (Wajib), Sunnah or Supererogatory (Nafl).

As mentioned in Fatawa A'alamgiri, Vol. 1, Pg No. 70:

If someone bends to the extent that the hands just touch the knees, even then they can come back to the standing position recite another Surah and perform the prostration for forgetting some article of Salaat.  As mentioned in Radd ul Muhtaar, Kitaab Us Salaat.

And Allah Most High knows best.
