Question: Please describe what kind of Miswak may we use and what we may not? ............................................................................
Answer: The use of Miswak of every tree is valid and correct. It is Mustahab (Commendable) that Miswak should be of soft tree with a sour taste. The best of all Miswak is the Miswak of Babul and then of olive, however, the Miswak of pomegranate and bamboo is harmful and their use is not correct. It is given in Miraqil Falah, Pg. No. 40: Translation: Miswak should be of a soft tree, as thick as a finger, as long as a handspan, the least knotted and of Babul. It is given in Tahtawi ‘Ala Miraqil Falah: Translation: It is Mustahab that it should be dry and wet at the time of using it and it should be washed after using it, so that the Satan does not use it as Miswak. The Miswak should be of a bitter tree, as this decreases phlegm, clears the chest and helps in digestion of food. The Afdhal (superior) one is of Babul, then olive and the Miswak of any tree is permissible, excepting pomegranate and bamboo as this is harmful from the medical point of view. And Allah knows best.
