Question: After Eid Ul Fitr, 6 fasts of Shawwal are kept. Someone said that Nafl fasts should not be kept continuously. Please guide us. ............................................................................
Answer: The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has given the glad tidings for those who fast in Shawwal that they will be given the reward of fasting for the whole year. There is a Hadith in Sahih Muslim. Vol. 1, Pg No. 369: Translation: It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Ayyub Ansari (May Allah be well pleased with him), he said that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: The one who fasts in Ramadhan, then keeps 6 fasts in Shawwal, that person will be given the reward of fasting for all time. About Supererogatory (Nafl) fasts, the jurists have said that it is better to keep those fasts on alternate days. The method for fasting in the month of Shawwal is that we should fast for 2 days in every week. Even if someone wants to fast continuously on 6 days, there is no problem. As given in Durre Mukhtaar, Vol. 2, Pg No. 136. As given in Fatawa A'alamgiri, Vol. 1, Pg No. 201 about Supererogatory fasts. And Allah Most High knows best.
