f:161 -    Eating meat of elephant
Country : Pakistan,
Name : Abdul Ahad
Question:     Assalamalaikum wa Rahmatullah, Mufti Sahab, Is it allowed to eat the meat of animals like elephant and tiger etc.?  when the prohibition of eating the meat of elephant is not present in either the Holy Quran and apparently not in the Hadith as well and elephants were present in the time of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and it is the principle of the Shariah that which is prohibited is stopped from and on which the Shariah is silent, is Mubah and all things are inherently permissible (Jayaz), then is eating the meat of the elephant permissible or not?  If it is not permissible, then what about the principle of the Shariah that things are inherently permissible?  What is it about?

Answer:     Walaikum Assalamalaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa barakutuhu, the Holy Quran and the Hadith give principles and the rulings are placed on them.  In the Hadith, there is a prohibition of eating the meat of animals who have pointed teeth and all animals which come in this category are prohibited.  As given in the Hadith No: 3309 of Sunan Abu Dawood.

And Allah Most High knows best.
