f:149 -    Does smoke from vehicles break the fast
Country : Not mentioned,
Name : Syed Ilyas Bakhtiyar
Question:     Nowadays, traffic and pollution has increased quite a bit.  The smoke released by the vehicles has also increased.  What should we do if while fasting, the smoke etc. released by the vehicles enters our throat?
............................................................................
Answer:     Smoke whether it is released from vehicles or from any other source, if it enters the throat of the fasting person involuntarily, without his/her intention, it does not invalidate the fast.  As given in Fatawa A’alamgiri, Vol. 1, Pg No: 203:

Translation: Whether it is smoke or dust raised by the feet of the animals, if it enters the throat of a fasting person, it does not invalidate the fast as it is not possible to save oneself from it.

Thus, if smoke from vehicles enters the throat of a fasting person without any intention, it does not break the fast.

And Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) knows best.
