f:137 -    Pants below the ankle in Salaat
Country : India,
Name : Ali
Question:     Is it Makruh Tahrimi to fold the pants till above the ankles in Salaat?  We keep our pants so long because of fashion.  If we fold our pants, does it come under wearing inside-out clothes?  Or can we fold our pants and pray?
............................................................................
Answer:     As per a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari, the cloth/garment which goes down the ankles will go into Hell.  For this reason, generally, even out of Salaat, letting the garment go below the ankles has been declared a sign of the hypocrites (Munafiqin) ("Alamatul Munafiq, Hadith No: 41198.  There is a Hadith in Sunan Abu Dawood which says that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) advised a person: Keep your garment up till the calves, if you do not like it, then till the ankles and be mindful that the garment does not fall below the ankles, as this is because of pride and Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) does not like pride.

Salaat should be with utmost humility, so letting the garment fall below the ankles in Salaat is strictly undesirable and the Hadith prohibit against folding of garments as well.  As per Sahih Bukhari, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) says:........ordered Me not to gather up my clothes in Salaat.  (Durre Mukhtar, Vol. 1, Pg No: 640.  The summary is that it is Forbidden (Haram) to fold or gather up one's clothes in Salaat.  Some scholars have said that either folding clothes from below the ankle or pulling them up from the waist, both are Makruh, some other scholars have said that in the Hadith, there are no stern warnings/condemnations about letting one's garments fall below the ankle, so it is not Makruh to fold the clothes from the bottom.  The best course is that from the start itself, clothes should be stitched in such a way that the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is followed and eternal blessings are gained.

And Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) knows best.
