f:1219 -    Graffiti on books of libraries
Country : India,
Name : Javed Akram
Question:     In the central library, the members are allowed to take the books with them for the purpose of studying them.  Some members who take the books reading them write their names on those books or sign on them.  Some people write some couplets on those books.  Does the Shariah permit this?
............................................................................
Answer:     The books given the central library to its members are given on loan.  Obviously, the members are not the owners of those books.  For things given on loan, the rule is that they can be used only in the manner the owner of that thing permits it.

Generally, it is not permitted to write on the books given to the members of the library.  Thus, in the light of the Shariah, it is impermissible to write names or couplets or sign on the books given by the library.

As mentioned in Al Jauhartun Nayyira, Kitaab Ul A’ariya, Masaail Fil A’ariya.

And Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala) knows best.
