f:1208 -    Is it permissible to recite the Holy Quran in the graveyard?
Country : Hyderabad, India,
Name : Feroz Ahmad
Question:     A friend of mine says that it is mentioned in the Holy Quran that it is a sin to recite the Holy Quran in the graveyard after burial.  I want to know whether this is true or not.
............................................................................
Answer:     There is no prohibition in the Holy Quran or Hadith regarding recitation of the Holy Quran after burial.  On the other hand, the Hadith mention the recitation of Surah Fatiha and Surah Baqarah, as related by Imam Tabarani (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) in M’ojam Kabeer and Imam Baihaqui in Shu’abul Imaan:

Translation: Hadhrat Ayyoob bin Nahaik (May Allah be well pleased with him) says:  I heard Hadhrat ‘Ata bin Rabaah (May Allah be well pleased with him) say:  I heard Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them) say:  I heard the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) say:  When any one of you passes away, don’t delay that person and take him (or her) to the grave as soon as possible.  When the deceased is in the grave, stand by the head of the deceased and recite Surah Fatiha.  By the foot of the grave the last 2 verses of Surah Baqarah should be recited.

(M’ojam Kabeer Tabarani, Hadith No. 13438; Shu’abul Imaan, Hadith No. 8986)

Also, Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them) preferred the recitation of the first 5 verses and last 2 verse of Surah Baqarah at the time of burial, as mentioned in Mirqaatul Mafateeh, Kitaab Ul Imaan, Baabu Ithbaati Azaabil Qabr on the authority of Sunan Baihaqui.

And Allah Most High knows best.
