f:1196 -    Can we exchange greetings on the coming of a new year
Country : Spain,
Name : Layeeq Ahmed
Question:     Can we greet each other on the dawn of the New Year, whether Islamic or Gregorian?
............................................................................
Answer:     The dawn of a new year is indeed a great blessing of Allah Most High.  It is nothing but the grant of Allah that one period has ended and another is beginning.  We should thank Allah Most High for this great bounty of His.  However, wishing each other on this occasion and exchanging greetings isn’t established by the customs of the Pious Predecessors and the elders and elite of the Ummah.  These blessed personalities have always kept the ultimate objective in mind and kept themselves aloof of prevalent customs.

However, as a new year is also a bounty of Allah Most High, there is no problem if prayers and supplications for blessings and Barakah are exchanged.

The new year of Islam starts with the martyrdom of Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him), the 2nd Caliphs of Islam and the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (May Allah be well pleased with him) and it ends with Hajj and sacrifice in the name of Allah Most High.  The beginning and the end of the Islamic year give the message that each and every moment of a Muslim should be reserved for seeking the pleasure and approval of Almighty Allah.

And Allah knows best.
