f:1137 -    Reciting the Holy Quran at the time of burial
Country : Hyderabad, India,
Name : Feroz Ahmed
Question:     A friend of mine says that is mentioned in the Holy Quran that reciting the Holy Quran in the graveyard after burial is a sin.  Is this correct?
............................................................................
Answer:     There is no prohibition in the Holy Quran and/or Hadith of recitation of the Holy Quran after burial.  On the contrary, recitation of Surah Fatiha and Surah Baqarah is mentioned in the Hadith.  As seen in this Hadith recorded by Imam Tabarani in Mo’jam Kabeer Tabarani and Imam Baihaqui in Shua’bul Iman:

Translation: Hadhrat Ayyub bin Naheek (May Allah be well pleased with him) says:  I heard Hadhrat ‘Ata bin Rabah say:  I heard from Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them), he said:  I heard the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) say:  When anyone of you passes away, you don’t delay his last rites and take him to his grave as soon as possible.  When the body is in the grave, Surah Fatiha should be recited at the head of the grave and at the foot of the grave the last 2 verses of Surah Baqarah should be recited.  (Mo’jam Kabeer Tabarani, Hadith No. 13438; Shua’bul Iman, Hadith No. 8986)

Also, Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them) liked the recitation of the initial 5 verses and the last 2 verses of Surah Baqarah at the time of the burial.  As mentioned in Mirqaatul Mafateeh on the authority of Sunan Baihaqui.  (Mirqaatul Mafateeh, Kitab Ul Iman)

And Allah Most High knows best.
