Question: Can we take photos or make videos? ............................................................................
Answer: There is a difference of opinion among the scholars about photography/videography. Some hold the opinion that as the Hadith have warnings about photos, taking photographs/making vidoes is not allowed. Others, have the opinion that the "photo" mentioned in the Hadith refers to making statues and/or paintings. The modern photograph or video is a kind of reflection of the person. Thus, it is permissible. The thumb rule here is that if we can see something, we can photograph it as well. For e.g. a man can see men and can photograph them or make videos of them and a woman can see women and photograph them or make videos of them, but a man cannot photograph non-Mahram women and vice versa for women. There is no problem in taking photographs or making vidoes to propagate Islam, to inform others of Islamic activities and for other good causes. There are many benefits of it, which don’t need any explanation. And Allah The Most Beneficent and The Most Compassionate knows best.
