Question:     Is Salaat valid behind a Khateeb who is not an Alim?

Answer:     To be eligible for becoming an Imam, it is necessary to be aware of the necessary rules and regulations.  To be a certified scholar is not a condition.  However, a scholar is more preferable for leading Salaat than somebody else who merely knows the necessary rules of Salaat.

Salaat behind an Imam who knows the necessary rules is valid.  As written by Allama Alauddin Kasani (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) in Bada'i Us Sana'i, Kitab Us Salaat.

And Allah the Most Merciful and the Most Beneficent knows best.
