What you have heard is true and is established through Hadith. The heat of this world is due to the breathing of hell. Thus, there is a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari:
Translation: It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be well pleased with him), he relates from the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) that He said: When heat is at its peak, delay your Salaat Ul Zuhr, as the intensity of heat is due to the simmering of hell. Hell entreated Almighty Allah: One part of mine is consuming the other. Then the Lord Almighty permitted it to take 2 breaths, one in summer and one in winter. Thus, the intense heat you feel is due to that breath of hell and the severe cold that you feel is (also) due to it. (Sahih Bukhari, Kitaab Mawaqeet Us Salaat, Hadith No. 536)
