f:213 -    How much Zakaat?
Country : India,
Name : Abdul Mannan
Question:     Asslamalaikum Wa Rahmatullah, my question is about Zakaat.  I have 120 grams of gold and some expensive clothes, but no bank balance of any kind.  Instead, I have Rs. 87500 as debt.  What is the amount of Zakaat Wajib on me?

Answer:     If the gold is your property and the expensive clothes are for trade/business and 1 year has passed on it, then you should find out the amount of both of them.  Then, the amount of 87,500 should be subtracted from it.  On the remaining amount, Zakaat of 2.5% is Obligatory (Fardh) and that amount should be given in charity with the intention of Zakaat.

If the gold is the property of the wife, then the Zakaat should be given by the wife.  With the wife's permission and agreement, the husband may give the Zakaat, but the loan owed by the husband will not be subtracted from it.  Instead, if there is any debt on the owner of the gold, that will be subtracted.

If the clothes and vehicle are not with the intention of trade i.e. buying and/or selling, then there is no Zakaat on them, no matter how expensive they are.

And Allah Most High knows best.
