  AR 809 : Permissible things when fasting-II

Permissible things when fasting

It is permissible to use Kohl when fasting

First Hadith

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Anas (May Allah be well pleased with him), he says:  A Companion came to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and said:  I have some problem with my eyes.  Can I use kohl while fasting?  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  Yes.  Kohl can be used while fasting?

Tirmidhi has related this Hadith.

Second Hadith

It is narrated on the authority of the mother of the believers Hadhrat ‘Aisha (May Allah be well pleased with her) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) would use kohl when fasting.

Ibn Majah, Abu Dawood and Daraqutni have related this Hadith.  This Hadith of Hadhrat ‘Aisha (May Allah be well pleased with her) is also related in Sharh Niqaaya.

Third Hadith

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Ubaydullah bin Abi Bakr bin Anas bin Malik (May Allah be well pleased with them) that Anas bin Malik (May Allah be well pleased with him) would use the kohl when fasting.

Abu Dawood has related this Hadith.

Fourth Hadith

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat A’amash (May Allah shower His Mercy on him), he says:  I have not seen any of my contemporary scholars who declare use of kohl when fasting as Undesirable and Ibrahim Nakha’ee (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) would permit the fasting persons to use kohl…

Abu Dawood has related this Hadith.

Description of pouring water on the head when fasting

It is narrated on the authority of a Companion of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), he says:  I saw the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) at ‘Arj that he was pouring water on his blessed head when in a fasting state out of (extreme) thirst or heat.

Imam Malik and Abu Dawood have related this Hadith.

The pouring of the water on the head out of thirst or heat that is mentioned in the Hadith is intended as an expression of permissibility so as to create ease for weak people.  For this reason, Imam Abu Hanifa (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) has declared getting into water or wrapping wet garments around the body while fasting to be Undesirable and against the Sunnah as this indicates straitening of the heart and dejection with regard to worship. (As stated in Durre Mukhtaar, Radd ul Muhtaar and Mirqaat)
