AR 787 : A menstruating woman should make up her missed fasts but the Salaat of those days is waived

A menstruating woman should make up her missed fasts but the Salaat of those days is waived

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Mu’aadha (May Allah be well pleased with her), she says:  I asked the mother of the believers, Hadhrat ‘Aisha (May Allah be well pleased with her):  Why is it that a menstruating woman should make up her missed fasts but doesn’t make up her missed Salaat?  On this, Hadhrat ‘Aisha (May Allah be well pleased with her) asked:  Are you a Khariji woman?  I answered:  No, I am not.  I just want to know this.  Then Hadhrat ‘Aisha (May Allah be well pleased with her) said:  We would have our periods and we would be ordered to make up our missed fasts, but we wouldn’t be ordered to make up our missed Salaat.

This is related by both Bukhari and Muslim.

The (Arabic) words mentioned in this Hadith:  Hurooriyyah comes from Huroora which is a settlement near Kufa and this is the place from where the Kharijites originated.  They were a people who rebelled against the caliphate of Hadhrat ‘Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) and broke away from the Ahle Sunnah and followed an entirely different path.  They eventually turned into a misguided sect.

In this Hadith, when Hadhrat ‘Aisha (May Allah be well pleased with her) asked her (about her beliefs), she doubted whether that this question was not because of wrong beliefs.  That’s the reason, she asked that woman:  Are you from among the Kharijites?

Hadhrat ‘Aisha (May Allah be well pleased with her) also asked this because a group of Kharijites had declared making up of the Salaat missed in menstrual periods as Compulsory (Wajib).  When that woman answered that she was not a Kharijite, Hadhrat ‘Aisha (May Allah be well pleased with her) gave her the reply that is mentioned in the Hadith.  (‘Aini, Mo’jam Ul Buldaan & Daairatul Ma’arif Bustani)12
