f:671 -    Ruling about Salaat missed in coma
Country : Prabhani,
Name : Ilyas Qadri
Question:     A certain acquaintance would offer all 5 Salaat.  Unfortunately, he suffered an accident and has been in coma for 2 days.  We hope that he comes out of coma soon.

What is want to know is what will be ruling about the Salaat for the time period that he is in coma?  Will he have to offer Qaza or give some charity?

............................................................................
Answer:     Coma is a form of unconsciousness.  Corresponding with the different types of coma, the condition of the patient also varies.  Usually, in this state, the patient becomes oblivious to his or her surroundings and is insensate.  Sometimes, the unconsciousness is light and the patient does move.  Patients are said to come out of this kind of coma soon.  Sometimes, it is of a deeper kind wherein only the body functions are going on and the patient remains in this state for a long time.

If a person is in coma and misses 5 or less than 5 Salaat, then the Qaza of the missed Salaat is Compulsory (Wajib) on the person.  If 6 or more Salaat are missed, then there is no Qaza.  As mentioned in Fatawa A'alamgiri, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 121.

As the said person has been in coma for 2 days, then he does not have offer the Qaza Salaat of the missed Salaat.  Any charity, etc. is also not necessary.  He can start offering regular Salaat after getting well.  May Allah Most High deliver him from this difficulty soon.

And Allah Most High knows best.
