f:653 -    Expenses of grown up son
Country : Hubli, India,
Name : Nazimuddin Shakil
Question:     If the son has grown up and earns, then he bears his own expenses, but if the son has grown up, but is ill and cannot earn because of illness or is in someway unable to earn, then will the father have to bear the expenses.  What happens is that children even they become major cannot earn their own money and bear their expenses.  Who has to bear their expenses?
Answer:     The expenses of the son are the responsibility of the father until the son becomes a major.  When the son becomes a major, then the Shariah declares him as responsible for his expenses.  Now, the father is not responsible for the expenses.

If the adult son is ill or in someway does not have the capability to earn, then as per the Shariah, the responsibility of such a son is the responsibility of the father.  In the same way, the expenses of the son who has reached adulthood and has the capability to work, but cannot work as required, are the responsibility of the father as per the Shariah.

As given in Fatawa A'alamgiri, Kitab Ut Talaq.

And Allah Most High knows best.
