f:1146 -    When to recite the supplication for breaking fast
Country : Hyderabad, India,
Name : Jameel Qadri
Question:     When should we recite the Dua when breaking fast?  After breaking it or before breaking it?
............................................................................
Answer:     There is a Hadith in this regard in Sunan Abu Dawood:

Translation: When the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) would break his fast, He would say:

Transliteration: Dhahabadh dhamau wabtallatil ‘urooqu wa thabatal ajru Insha Allah.

Translation: Thirst has been quenched, tissues have been watered and reward has been established, Allah-willing.  (Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith No. 2010)

There is another Hadith in Sunan Abu Dawood:

Translation: It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Ma’adh bin Zuhra (May Allah be well pleased with him), he says that when the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) would break his fast, He would say:

Transliteration: Allahuma Laka Sumtu Wa ‘Ala Rizqika Aftartu.

Translation: O Allah!  I have fasted for You and break the fast with the sustenance that You have provided.

While breaking the fast, date or some such thing, can be had either before reciting (any of the above) supplication or after it.  However, the Sunnah way is that first the fast should be broken and then the supplication should be recited.

As Hadhrat Mulla ‘Ali Qari (May Allah shower His mercy on him) has written in the commentary of the aforementioned Hadith in Mirqaat Ul Mafateeh Sharh Mishkaat Ul Masabeeh, Vol. 2, Pg. No. 514.

And Allah Most High knows best.
