f:275 -    Suckling infants beyond 2 years
Country : India,
Name : Syed Waheed
Question:     Is it forbidden to suckle children beyond 2 years?  Please answer as per Fiqh Hanafi.
............................................................................
Answer:     Allah Most High has made food as a means of survival and has decreed appropriate food for each living entity.  Thus, the food of the infants has been decreed as milk, which is appropriate for them.  Allah Most High says in the Holy Quran in Surah Baqarah:

And the mothers shall suckle their infants for two full years. This (injunction) is for him who wants to complete the suckling period. And, according to usage, the food and clothing of the feeding mothers is the obligation of the father of the child. No soul should be stressed beyond its capacity, (and) neither the mother nor the father should be harmed for the child.  Surah Baqarah (2:233)

The most authoritative and reliable opinion is that the period of suckling is 2 years.  As there is no need for breast milk after 2 years, so suckling after 2 years is not correct as per the Shariah, as given in the famous book of Fiqh Hanafi, Tabyeen Ul Haqaaiq, Vol. 2, Pg No. 634

And Allah Most High knows best.
