f:1252 -    Is selling live poultry by weight permissible
Country : Hyderabad, India,
Name : Shaykh Maqsood

Question:
I went to buy chicken and bought 4 kilos of chicken.  When I brought it home, the quantity seemed less.  The quantity was substantially reduced after the chicken was skinned and chopped.  My question is does the Shariah permit weighing and selling live chickens or merely selling the meat after the slaughter is permissible?

.....................................................................................................................................
Answer:
Weighing and selling live chickens is perfectly permissible, as what is being sold (i.e. the chicken) is known and fixed.  Thus, there is no problem as per the Shariah in selling chickens by weight.  As given in Badaa’i Us Sanaa’i, Kitaab Ul Buyoo.

And Allah Most High knows best.
