f:1251 -    Hotel management charging rent for the whole day even if the room is not used that much
Country : Jeddah, KSA,
Name : Sharjil Khan

Question:
When journeying we take a room for resting or for safety of our luggage, etc.  The management of the hotel gives the room on rent for a minimum of 1 day.  We booked the room for 2 days.  However, we had to change our program suddenly and we left the room within 2 to 4 hours.  However, the hotel manager made us pay the rent of the full 2 days.  Is this correct?

Answer:
If we take something on hire and we get the possession of that thing as well, then giving the rent is Compulsory (Wajib) regardless of whether we derive any benefit from that thing or not.

You booked the hotel room for 2 days and then vacated it on the second day within a few hours.  As it was agreed between the hotel management and you that the room would be given for a minimum of 1 day, the hotel manager charging you for the second day is not at all objectionable.

Of course, if the hotel management chooses to give you some kind of discount for the second day or chooses not to charge you anything for that day, it is up to them.  As mentioned in Radd Ul Muhtaar, Kitaab Ul Ijaarah, Shurootul Ijaarah.

And Allah Most High knows best.
